Manchester Bee

I'm a child of Manchester. And the Manchester bee has always been a prominent symbol of the  city, representing the city's industrious spirit and hard-working community, especially during the Industrial Revolution.

It's a worker bee, reflecting Manchester's status as a hive of activity and its history of industrial innovation. The bee has also gained significance as a symbol of unity

Tel Aviv Tourism

I've seen lots of versions of this old poster, probably from the 1940s or 50s. I sketched it out on four 6" x 6" ceramic tiles and then used acrylic paint and a glossy varnish finish.

Queen Esther

Inspired by Herman Anschutz's "Esther," which I saw in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.

I wanted to capture the sense of mystery and the regal tone. And there was something about the pose that really struck me.

Pop-art George Washington

Inspired by Gilbert Stuart's 1821 portrait

And I wanted to enhance it with a blue and white element, that pulls the image out of the darkness while also giving it a stronger contrast.

Israeli flag. But I wanted to abstract it out a little more, and use the contrast of the LP record to sharpen the elegance of the blue and white.

FDR Pop-art

I feel like I've seen versions of his portrait  in so many stories of our American lives. Of how many of our grandparents/parents kept portraits of him in their dining rooms, as a mark of respect. He's always fascinated me. I wanted to keep the concept of shadows and darkness (using the LP record itself without painting), while stylizing the pop-art elements.

Judith

During the Ashuri (Assyrian) siege Judith rallies the leadership and calls on the people to stay strong. "Listen to me, and I will do something which will be remembered throughout all generations among the children of our nation." She decapitates the Ashuri General Holofernes with his own sword.

I took the painting by Caravaggio, maybe done around 1600,  as the basis for my version. I wanted
